Para un verdadero apasionado del cine quizá el ejercicio más complejo de todos sea elegir sus películas favoritas. El haber generado profundos lazos de estética, emoción y agradecimiento con cientos de filmes, y de pronto tener que descartar la mayoría para dejar solo un puñado de predilectos, debe ser una tarea dura, incluso angustiante, para un cinéfilo.

Cuando al final de su vida Akira Kurosawa se abocó a enlistar sus cien películas favoritas, seguramente pasó un rato difícil. La sensibilidad que caracterizó la trayectoria de este célebre director japonés, aunada a la erudición cinematográfica que poseía –como resultado de haber visto miles de filmes–, deben haber impreso un carácter épico a tal ejercicio. Quizá por eso Kurosawa decidió auto-imponerse una guía: incluir solo un título de cada director, lo cual le obligó a dejar fuera obras maestras de ciertos creadores que acuñaron a lo largo de su carrera más de una obra brillante.

En la lista de Kurosawa existen ciertas particularidades, siendo tal vez la más sorpresiva la exclusión de Orson Welles (sin duda se extraña Citizen Kane). Por otro lado, también sorprende, y gratamente, la consideración de Stranger than Paradise (1984), de Jim Jarmusch; el ubicar a Un Chien Andalou (1928), de Luis Buñuel, en el sexto lugar de predilección; o el haber considerado a Hana-bi (1997), la tierna comedia de su compatriota Takeshi Kitano, y la cual se estrenó apenas un año antes de que Kurosawa muriera.
